(updated by ~mc~ on 7/28/17 – goddamn time flies – and Nashville Pussy is still rocking it all over the world!)
Say Something Nasty is the new Artemis album by Nashville Pussy. Not surprisingly, NP singer/guitarist Blaine Cartwright declares in no uncertain terms that, “It’s our best one yet!”
But Blaine’s words are-to quote John Lee Hooker-“no brag, just facts.” This 15-track set of raunchy, high-voltage Southern guitar rock features the best songs and sharpest production yet from this Georgia-based quartet. Say Something Nasty includes such hilarious, hard-rocking originals as “You Give Drugs a Bad Name,” “Keep Them Things Away From Me,” “Beat Me Senseless,” and “Gonna Hitchhike Down to Cincinnati And Kick The Shit Outta Your Drunk Daddy.”
To record Say Something Nasty, Blaine explains, “we went back to Glasgow, Kentucky and worked with [producer] David Barrick. I knew him from my old band, Nine-Pound Hammer. David runs a small studio with big-time machines. He installed the board, he engineered all the sessions-he’s the whole show! He’s worked with a lot of up-and-coming bands, doing demos, and also with Kentucky Headhunters and with Bernie Worrell.”
The entire album took less than three weeks to track and mix. “Glasgow is in a dry county, which kept everyone concentrated,” notes Blaine. “It’s impossible to score any weed, and the nearest beer is 30 miles away. You can’t even buy a Playboy magazine! So the only place to go every day was the studio.”
Say Something Nasty contains 11 new songs written by Blaine Cartwright, although “I credit everybody because of their contributions.” Two other standouts are “Beat Me Senseless,” recorded for a Circle Jerks tribute album, and a blazing take on Johnny Winter’s “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo.” “Say Something Nasty,” “Can’t Get Rid Of It,” and “Gonna Hitchhike Down To Cinicinnati And Kick The Shit Outta Your Drunk Daddy” also appear on a 3 song sampler that is being serviced to metal and rock specialty radio.
Formed in 1996, the current lineup of Nashville Pussy features Kentucky-born singer/guitarist Blaine Cartwright, lead guitarist Ruyter Suys (pronounced “Rider Sighs”), drummer Jeremy “Remo” Thompson, and bassist Katie Lynn Campbell a/k/a “Vampire Girl.” The band’s debut album, Let Them Eat Pussy, was released on Amphetamine Reptile in 1998 and later picked up by Mercury Records for national distribution. A track from that album entitled “Fried Chicken and Coffee” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Nashville Pussy’s second disc, High As Hell, was released in 2000 on TVT Records. Two cuts from High As Hell – “Wrong Side of A Gun” and “Shoot First and Run Like Hell” – were featured in the film Super Troopers and on the soundtrack album.
This is one “people’s band” that has garnered some surprisingly favorable press. Philadelphia’s City Paper called Nashville Pussy “arguably the funniest, raunchiest, most kick-ass group in rock today.” The Orange County Weekly wrote: “Nashville Pussy [are] a guilty pleasure-swaggering, menacing, hedonistic, riveting-yet they don’t come off as contrivedPart of their potency, no doubt, is that they’ve got excellent musicianship to back up the glimmer.”
For nearly six years, Nashville Pussy has virtually lived on the road. “Out of the last six months, we’ve been home for about three weeks,” says Blaine. “We don’t go home!” They’ve held their own in venues ranging from a Hell’s Angels festival in France to the 2000 “Tattoo the Earth” tour with Slipknot, Slayer, and Sevendust. During a European tour in the summer of 2001, the band managed the astonishing feat of playing four different European festivals within 40 hours.
Contrary to popular myth, the Nashville Pussy live experience does not include fire-breathing, live sex, or the open promotion and use of narcotics. (In the audience, maybe, but not on the stage.)
“All that stuff’s just a myth,” says Blaine with a chuckle. “It’s the kind of thing that always starts going around about any crazy, high-energy rock and roll show. When I was growing up, I heard that Alice Cooper killed puppies on stage. People swore they had seen this!”
“We just try to create a situation where you think anything can happen. We always have good shows in places like Indiana, where there’s nothing else to do.”
Perhaps the key line in Say Something Nasty comes from the anthemic, uproarious “Keep On’ Fucking,” in which Nashville Pussy declares, “you don’t have to be smart to understand.”
“That’s what this album and this band are really about,” declares Blaine Cartwright. “We rock for the stupid and the smart, and our audience runs the gamut every night. We’ll be closing with ‘Keep on Fucking’ for the next 20 years. We’re gonna shove this album up America’s ass!”[via Artemis Records]
Say Something Nasty comes out in Japan on July 24th with bonus tracks and will only be available thru the internet.[thanks countrystarr!]

A he said/she said review of _Say Something Nasty_
1. “Words of Wisdom” …at first we thought it was one of those Dick Delicious guys and then we were told it’s Blaine’s voice with some kind of distortion filter. Like he needs any more vocal distortion. Kinda reminds me of Alice Cooper’s “Lost in America” .
Except it’s about having a band with pussy in it:
Pussy it’s all about pussy You gotta sing about pussy, to get money You gotta get money, so you can get pussy And you gotta get pussy, so you can sing about it And a record company don’t let you sing about pussy, they ain’t your record company
2. “Say Something Nasty”
punkarella – The title song that gives you everything you need to know about Nashville Pussy’s music. When you hear the beginning riffs of this song you know Nashville Pussy is about to kick your ass live and in person.
BMF – My favorite song on the album. If today were the last day you could ever hear a rock and roll song this is the one to pick. It’s the one song AC/DC wishes they had written. A mix of Nugent Wango and AC/DC’s, “You Shook Me All Nite Long”. [Insert Your Own Favorite Rock Song Here] and you have “Say Something Nasty”. The ultimate guitar riffs…perfect ending to a perfect rock song.
3. “Drunk Daddy”
punkarella – Nobody can argue whether Nashville Pussy puts on the best live show going today … cause they do. We have heard this song live about eight times before and thought it was good but not really a showstopper. That has changed after listening to the album. The studio version of “Drunk Daddy” just became my new favorite Nashville Pussy song. I’m not sure what Blaine was doing the day he recorded it but his deep growling voice in this song makes me wet thus making it my new favorite. The guitar playing is heavenly too.
BMF – Makes me want to fight.
4. “You Give Drugs A Bad Name”
punkarella – Ok I’m spoiled. I love this song because we know its about once upon a time cool firebreathers becoming party poopers. The live version of this song sounds totally different to me. “You Give Drugs a Bad Name” and “Fried Chicken and Coffee” are my two favorites when I go to a NP show. I guess I fell for that sweet little rant Blaine spews out before they start playing it. Nevertheless I really love the live version of this song so the studio version seems a little bland to me.
BMF – I disagree. It’s a new rock and roll anthem. The live version and studio version sound the same.
punkarella – whatever.
5. “The Bitch Just Kicked Me Out”
punkarella – hmmmm…if I have to pick a “least favorite” song on the album this would be it. But I like the way Blaine sings “Oh Baby”.
BMF – Good song. I’m not really sure what he’s saying nor do I care. I just like the way he sings it.
6. “Keep On Fuckin’”
punkarella – The riffs in this song will cause you to fondle your own breasts no matter where you are when you hear it. Again I love this song live more than the studio version. The background vocals are too ummm clear or something. I like it better when Ruyter is doing her Angus Young impression and runs over all breathless to Blaine and sings into the microphone, “Keep On Fuckin”.
BMF – Another anthem song. If this song were on the radio today it would be #1 forever. Period.
7. “Jack Shack”
punkarella- this is the first of two songs co-written with former bassist, Tracy Almazon. I guess it’s pretty normal people have split emotions when a member of a band leaves. So yesterday there was a lot of discussion on the Nashville Pussy messageboard about whether Tracy was given proper credit for what she contributed to the new album. Tracy took it by the horns and put a end to the controversy by posting this message to everybody:
TRACY
“I’d like to express my thanks to lightbulb for encouraging people to call me at home….glad to see this bulletin board is as insane as ever. I wrote the music to Jack Shack when I was in Helldorado. Glenn Hettrick wrote the lyrics and named it Rocket to You. Helldorado broke up. Blaine wrote his own lyrics over the music and called it Down at the Jackshack. What was I supposed to do? Make a Helldorado shrine and…Blaine didn’t like the melody line Glen had done and I was pysched that Blaine did something different with it. It’s that simple. If anyone else has a good enough band, I’d be happy to unload some of these tunes on you, too. In the meantime, buy the album, listen to it real loud and just relax. I had a great time with Nashville Pussy, but everyone knows I don’t like playing the bass that much…despite how sweet that old Thunderbird is. Who’s the bass player for Nashville Pussy? Katie Lynn and she rocks. That’s all you need to know. Sure ’nuff!”
Very classy former pussy she is. As far as the song is concerned…it’s not the one I want to play over and over. But others might love it.
BMF – The guitar line reminds me of a train. Damn good song.
8. “Keep Them Things Away From Me”
punkarella – There is some awesome guitar playing in this song. And I like the reference to Atlanta but I don’t know what “them things” are yet.
BMF – I love the music but I don’t like the singing.
9. “Here’s To Your Destruction”
punkarella – The second song co-written with Tracy. It’s a little off vein for me. Too ummm bluegrassy or something. But that’s just my own personal taste. There is a really good guitar riff in it though.
BMF – I like it. It’s a drinking song and it sounds like they are having fun playing it. “Here’s to your destruction…I’ll buy the next round…” And like I already said it has a kind of ‘boogie woogie’ flavor to it that really shows Ruyter can play anything she wants to and play it like no other. Most NP songs make me feel like fighting or fuckin but this one just makes me feel happy.
10. “Let’s Get the Hell Outta Here”
punkarella – I really like this song. It’s like a fast car going real fast. Speed guitar and fast vocals.
BMF – Hillbilly punk.
11. “Slow Movin’ Train”
punkarella – Oh yeah this is the “slow” romantic song on the album and I love it. Real southern rock and roll.
BMF – Reminds me of Bad Company.
12. “Beat Me Senseless”
punkarella – “No pain … no gain … come on … Beat Me Senseless” …
BMF – I love this song cause I love punk. This sounds like a Southernized version of the punk band Fear.
13. “Can’t Get Rid of It”
punkarella – ……………………………………………
BMF – I like it.
14. “Rock n Roll Hoochie Coo”
punkarella – I must have grown up at the same time Blaine did cause this was a teenage anthem when I was growing up in the South. It must be a guy song cause guys always wanted to sing it to me in the backseat of a car. That was before I knew what a hoochie coo was but I never liked the song anyway. I realize it’s supposed to be a salute to the real pussy in the band(something Prince is famous for)and it is a better version than the Derringer original. The best Drunk Daddy addition has to be Blaine wailing, “Did somebody say keep on rockin’? It was meeeeeeeeeeeeeee.”
BMF – I don’t really like the song either but if I have to listen to it I prefer the Nashville Pussy version.
I’d say Nashville Pussy won them over wouldn’t you? Rock and Roll Hoochie Cooooooooo!!!!!!
Ohhh there is much more to come about Nashville Pussy getting back on the road last night. They were so fired up! The Blue Cat is a great club…wish we had one like it in Atlanta. The sound seemed great to me cause my ears are still ringing. And nothing can get you more excited than pulling up to a club and seeing Harley’s lined up and down the street. NP has added more of their new songs to the setlist and it’s all tight. Blaine was in a great mood and his speeches are becoming legendary. Katie fits like a glove and is a perfect counterpart to Ruyter who is just the sexiest and sweetest little rocker ever. And the only thing we can say about Jeremy is he’s the best drummer in the best band.
By the way if you like headbanging music sorta like Black Sabbath you are going to love Nebula. I also think they should keep Dick Delicious on the road with them too. They turn it into the perfect triple musical extravaganza. Even if they have been tainted in a previous life by some fat ugly bitch with a big stinky pussy wearing a towel on her head. No they don’t wear masks in their act even if they should cause all the fat ugly girls are waiting for them with baseball bats after the show. Plus they caused me to worry Ozzy had actually died after their little tribute to him. But I have to forgive them cause they are good looking and cause they are just trying to cover up the fact they can really play that fucking music white boy.
Stay tuned. More thoughts and most importantly lots of pictures coming soon.
These are from Steamboat Springs, CO at ‘Levelz’. For a day to day diary of the trip go to Miss Chicky’s. More pictures to follow as we get them downloaded to the computer.
Click on a thumbnail for the original image.
These movies are long downloads unless you have high speed shit, but they are worth it.
(6/14/17 update from mc – these movie clip files are from 2002 and they are dead links but when I find them I will bring them into current time for people to see again. Part 1 of the Steamboat Spring photos are missing and I’ll have to find them too on one of BMF’s computers and repost but down below we have part 2 found at BMF’s original Whatever Happened to Rock and Roll website. Woo!
According to my clock Nashville Pussy is probably just about ready to crank it up at The Bluebird tonight. Tomorrow will be a rest day. I just wonder how much they actually rest. E-mail us to add your reviews, stories, personal worship of Nashville Pussy, and/or pictures to the 2002 Nashville Pussy Chronicles.
I feel sickly and I’m going back to bed. Goodnite honey… and open up anything you like…I’m weak tonight and you can do whatever you want cause I L O V E U.
Nashville Pussy Interview – October of 2001 by Antimusic
This is a great video interview for those of you who haven’t heard it yet. I don’t know who the guy is doing the interview but he’s really good. His pen name is Phil Dis., who is probably a real sober respectable type journalist because he asked good and sometimes tough questions. If you can’t get a chance to talk to the members of Nashville Pussy before or after a show, this interview will give you a little bit of their off stage essence. They are real down to earth people who love their music, fans, and lifestyle.
The interview is approximately 12 minutes long. It has very poor video quality and some gaps in the sound, but it’s still a really great listen. NP talks about touring and how much they love it and how they go crazy when they are off the road. Phil asks Blaine what direction the third album would take considering the first album, “Let Them Eat Pussy” was more raw and punk than the second album’s, “Highway to Hell” hard rock sound. Blaine tells him the new album will be pretty much where the last album left off. They were hoping the new album would be out this past Christmas but were having problems with the album title…probably cause they want to call it, “Keep On Fuckin”…lol. Or maybe it’s what BMF and I were discussing…they are trying to come up with a cover design that will come close to the last two covers although the cover for “Let Them Eat Pussy” is one of a kind and will be hard to ever top. The album is first being released in Japan before being released here in the USA sometime in April.
However they have been playing a few of their new songs on tour since May or so last year … “Drunk Daddy” , “Say Something Nasty”, and “Keep On Fuckin'” . I also learned from the interview “You Give Drugs a Bad Name” is also a new song. I don’t know why but we thought it was one of their older songs. I guess because we saw them perform it at the Echo in Atlanta this past November. So it seemed like a oldie or someting but oh contrare because it’s really one of the highlights of their live show…the part where Blaine starts his storytelling and really gets the crowd cranking. We have a small piece of video of it from Colorado. After hearing the interview and reading this and this, it’s pretty clear the song is about Corey Parks. Blaine was real cool about it though when asked if Corey quit or was fired…he confirmed Corey was the one who quit the band.
One part of the interview seemed a little sad considering Tracy has now left the band under strange circumstances. Phil asked Tracey how she liked playing with NP and how it compared to her experiences with Helldorado and Wives. Tracey seemed really cool talking about how much more organized things were and how nice and “uncrazy” everyone was in NP. Phil also asked who wrote the new songs for the album for which Blaine replied he wrote all the songs except for the two Tracey had written for the new album. Ouch.
Other stuff they talked about: what kind of cars they drive…mostly souped up Chevrolets..their musical influences..who they listen to now…discussion of the controversial Pussy name…and favorite places to play. Plus Blaine recalls a funny story about Slayer.
Cause its fun to sort them and create those little picture organizer thingies. Here’s Nashville Pussy in Vail, Colorado at the 8150 Club on the first night of their first show in 2002. And what makes these pictures a little more special than all the other ten million Nashville Pussy pictures out there on the internet is the fact sweet little Katie Lynn Campbell with the big bass makes her first appearance with Nashville Pussy. As we all know by now Katie replaced Tracy Almazon who suddenly quit the band right before the tour started.
According to my calculations … Nashville Pussy will make a 450 mile drive today from Missouri to Madison, Wisconsin where they have a show at the Orpheum Theatre tonight. Then another 250 miles tomorrow to Champaign, Illinois.
