Nashville Pussy New Album “Say Something Nasty”

(updated by ~mc~ on 7/28/17 – goddamn time flies – and Nashville Pussy is still rocking it all over the world!)

Say Something Nasty is the new Artemis album by Nashville Pussy. Not surprisingly, NP singer/guitarist Blaine Cartwright declares in no uncertain terms that, “It’s our best one yet!”

But Blaine’s words are-to quote John Lee Hooker-“no brag, just facts.” This 15-track set of raunchy, high-voltage Southern guitar rock features the best songs and sharpest production yet from this Georgia-based quartet. Say Something Nasty includes such hilarious, hard-rocking originals as “You Give Drugs a Bad Name,” “Keep Them Things Away From Me,” “Beat Me Senseless,” and “Gonna Hitchhike Down to Cincinnati And Kick The Shit Outta Your Drunk Daddy.”

To record Say Something Nasty, Blaine explains, “we went back to Glasgow, Kentucky and worked with [producer] David Barrick. I knew him from my old band, Nine-Pound Hammer. David runs a small studio with big-time machines. He installed the board, he engineered all the sessions-he’s the whole show! He’s worked with a lot of up-and-coming bands, doing demos, and also with Kentucky Headhunters and with Bernie Worrell.”

The entire album took less than three weeks to track and mix. “Glasgow is in a dry county, which kept everyone concentrated,” notes Blaine. “It’s impossible to score any weed, and the nearest beer is 30 miles away. You can’t even buy a Playboy magazine! So the only place to go every day was the studio.”

Say Something Nasty contains 11 new songs written by Blaine Cartwright, although “I credit everybody because of their contributions.” Two other standouts are “Beat Me Senseless,” recorded for a Circle Jerks tribute album, and a blazing take on Johnny Winter’s “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo.” “Say Something Nasty,” “Can’t Get Rid Of It,” and “Gonna Hitchhike Down To Cinicinnati And Kick The Shit Outta Your Drunk Daddy” also appear on a 3 song sampler that is being serviced to metal and rock specialty radio.

Formed in 1996, the current lineup of Nashville Pussy features Kentucky-born singer/guitarist Blaine Cartwright, lead guitarist Ruyter Suys (pronounced “Rider Sighs”), drummer Jeremy “Remo” Thompson, and bassist Katie Lynn Campbell a/k/a “Vampire Girl.” The band’s debut album, Let Them Eat Pussy, was released on Amphetamine Reptile in 1998 and later picked up by Mercury Records for national distribution. A track from that album entitled “Fried Chicken and Coffee” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Nashville Pussy’s second disc, High As Hell, was released in 2000 on TVT Records. Two cuts from High As Hell – “Wrong Side of A Gun” and “Shoot First and Run Like Hell” – were featured in the film Super Troopers and on the soundtrack album.

This is one “people’s band” that has garnered some surprisingly favorable press. Philadelphia’s City Paper called Nashville Pussy “arguably the funniest, raunchiest, most kick-ass group in rock today.” The Orange County Weekly wrote: “Nashville Pussy [are] a guilty pleasure-swaggering, menacing, hedonistic, riveting-yet they don’t come off as contrivedPart of their potency, no doubt, is that they’ve got excellent musicianship to back up the glimmer.”

For nearly six years, Nashville Pussy has virtually lived on the road. “Out of the last six months, we’ve been home for about three weeks,” says Blaine. “We don’t go home!” They’ve held their own in venues ranging from a Hell’s Angels festival in France to the 2000 “Tattoo the Earth” tour with Slipknot, Slayer, and Sevendust. During a European tour in the summer of 2001, the band managed the astonishing feat of playing four different European festivals within 40 hours.

Contrary to popular myth, the Nashville Pussy live experience does not include fire-breathing, live sex, or the open promotion and use of narcotics. (In the audience, maybe, but not on the stage.)

“All that stuff’s just a myth,” says Blaine with a chuckle. “It’s the kind of thing that always starts going around about any crazy, high-energy rock and roll show. When I was growing up, I heard that Alice Cooper killed puppies on stage. People swore they had seen this!”

“We just try to create a situation where you think anything can happen. We always have good shows in places like Indiana, where there’s nothing else to do.”

Perhaps the key line in Say Something Nasty comes from the anthemic, uproarious “Keep On’ Fucking,” in which Nashville Pussy declares, “you don’t have to be smart to understand.”

“That’s what this album and this band are really about,” declares Blaine Cartwright. “We rock for the stupid and the smart, and our audience runs the gamut every night. We’ll be closing with ‘Keep on Fucking’ for the next 20 years. We’re gonna shove this album up America’s ass!”[via Artemis Records]

Say Something Nasty comes out in Japan on July 24th with bonus tracks and will only be available thru the internet.[thanks countrystarr!]

It’s Pussylicious

Say Something Nasty…

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

BMF I guess we can call that pussy news. :)~

Nashville Pussy’s webmistress has really been cleaning house and making changes over at the official NP website. Spend some time on there and you will find out just how much information the site contains about our favorite band. Visit it often and buy some NP momentos like this bonus CD you can’t buy anywhere else. It is definitely a collector’s item for anybody who likes rock and roll whether you are a Nashville Pussy fan or not…but you better become one or we will personally come and fuck your ass up. :)~~

Thanks to Nashville Pussy and Country Starr for letting us set up the new message board…where the real pussylicious fans go to give some love. Since March 7, 2002 there have been 100 messages and 663 visitors to the board. (the pussylicious message board is long gone, but it was fun while it lasted! – 2/12/17 update-mc)

Gotta love Ruyter… “There were a handful of guys that distracted me from my playing. Way to go Canadian boys! If you’re good enough you can eat me out on stage through my pants, but don’t bite me. Plus you have to be a relatively good pussy eater to get to the latex barrier.” [via ChartAttack]

Nashville Pussy will be in New York City the next two nights for shows at Irving Plaza. The last time NP played there was in June 2000 as the headliners with Supersuckers, The Unband, and Speed Dealer opening up. VIVA LA VULVA!

Oh those New Yorkers say the funniest things:

“I’m not going to lie to you – this band scares me shitless. Cartwright and Thompson make the Dukes of Hazard look like Siegfried and Roy. Suys and Parks make Daisy Dukes look like my saggy-breasted high-school guidance counselor. The band plays like tripping square dancers with rabid rattlesnakes shoved up their ass. If you’re not down with the sleazy party, get out of the way lest Nashville Pussy bulldoze you into the street.”[via NY Rock]

Nashville Pussy leaves a message from the road…

“Hey! We’re rocking!!”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The tour’s going great! As most of you know already our second bass player Tracy quit last month and has been replaced by Miss KatieLynn Campbell from Kentucky. KatieLynn is fitting into the band super easily!! She’s rocked harder than a fatherfucker for 17 shows now and is getting more rockin by the day! Our new record, tentatively titled ‘Say Something Nasty’ (featuring Keep On Fucking!) looks like it will be out on Artemis records . We hope the record will be out in April! Blaine’s Birthday was March 7th!!!! So all naked pictures can be sent directly here to us or our POBox in Atlanta!! Keep ’em coming!! Come on out and see the pussy in person- this tour has been excellent- we’re sorry to see Split Lip Rayfield go- they were superb- and whoda thunk bluegrass can still kick that much ass-but they were the perfect compliment to this tour – hopefully we’ll met up with them on ethe road- I know they’re playing SXSW (They’re on BLOODSHOT Records) LOVE the PUSSIES!!!!!!!!!!! ruyter, blaine, jeremy and the newest addition: KATIELYNN CAMPBELL

And while you are in there reading all that…interact a little and let them know which pussy page version you like better. #1 or #2. It’s a hard choice but I think I like #1 the most.

SXSW starts today. Who will be there?

Happy Birthday Blaine. :)~

Interesting Motherfucker: (noun)
An individual exhibiting such uniqueness or individuality that he or she will cause a roomful of bar cronies to exclaim, “That’s one interesting motherfucker!” Actual sexual relations with one’s mother are not required.

Once upon a time Blaine said:

“You obviously don’t have any real rock and roll bands around here,” Cartwright sneered after he stopped the band in the middle of “Go Motherfucker Go” to have one unruly fan thrown out of the club. [read]

Meanwhile…

Nashville Pussy will be lightin up the Paradise Rock Club in Boston tonight. We just saw the Reverend Horton Heat on a 1997 rerun of the Drew Carey Show.

Nashville Pussy Interview – October of 2001 by Antimusic

This is a great video interview for those of you who haven’t heard it yet. I don’t know who the guy is doing the interview but he’s really good. His pen name is Phil Dis., who is probably a real sober respectable type journalist because he asked good and sometimes tough questions. If you can’t get a chance to talk to the members of Nashville Pussy before or after a show, this interview will give you a little bit of their off stage essence. They are real down to earth people who love their music, fans, and lifestyle.

The interview is approximately 12 minutes long. It has very poor video quality and some gaps in the sound, but it’s still a really great listen. NP talks about touring and how much they love it and how they go crazy when they are off the road. Phil asks Blaine what direction the third album would take considering the first album, “Let Them Eat Pussy” was more raw and punk than the second album’s, “Highway to Hell” hard rock sound. Blaine tells him the new album will be pretty much where the last album left off. They were hoping the new album would be out this past Christmas but were having problems with the album title…probably cause they want to call it, “Keep On Fuckin”…lol. Or maybe it’s what BMF and I were discussing…they are trying to come up with a cover design that will come close to the last two covers although the cover for “Let Them Eat Pussy” is one of a kind and will be hard to ever top. The album is first being released in Japan before being released here in the USA sometime in April.

However they have been playing a few of their new songs on tour since May or so last year … “Drunk Daddy” , “Say Something Nasty”, and “Keep On Fuckin'” . I also learned from the interview “You Give Drugs a Bad Name” is also a new song. I don’t know why but we thought it was one of their older songs. I guess because we saw them perform it at the Echo in Atlanta this past November. So it seemed like a oldie or someting but oh contrare because it’s really one of the highlights of their live show…the part where Blaine starts his storytelling and really gets the crowd cranking. We have a small piece of video of it from Colorado. After hearing the interview and reading this and this, it’s pretty clear the song is about Corey Parks. Blaine was real cool about it though when asked if Corey quit or was fired…he confirmed Corey was the one who quit the band.

One part of the interview seemed a little sad considering Tracy has now left the band under strange circumstances. Phil asked Tracey how she liked playing with NP and how it compared to her experiences with Helldorado and Wives. Tracey seemed really cool talking about how much more organized things were and how nice and “uncrazy” everyone was in NP. Phil also asked who wrote the new songs for the album for which Blaine replied he wrote all the songs except for the two Tracey had written for the new album. Ouch.

Other stuff they talked about: what kind of cars they drive…mostly souped up Chevrolets..their musical influences..who they listen to now…discussion of the controversial Pussy name…and favorite places to play. Plus Blaine recalls a funny story about Slayer.

Why do we need so many damn pictures anyway?

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Cause its fun to sort them and create those little picture organizer thingies. Here’s Nashville Pussy in Vail, Colorado at the 8150 Club on the first night of their first show in 2002. And what makes these pictures a little more special than all the other ten million Nashville Pussy pictures out there on the internet is the fact sweet little Katie Lynn Campbell with the big bass makes her first appearance with Nashville Pussy. As we all know by now Katie replaced Tracy Almazon who suddenly quit the band right before the tour started.

Road Warriors

According to my calculations … Nashville Pussy will make a 450 mile drive today from Missouri to Madison, Wisconsin where they have a show at the Orpheum Theatre tonight. Then another 250 miles tomorrow to Champaign, Illinois.

Essay #1 on the Road Warriors.

The mere thought of this makes my tailbone ache.

Nashville Pussy Travels to the Midwest

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

<img alt=”2.22.02 …NP at the Blue Note in Missouri” src=”/web/20020223062003im_/http://www.misschicky.com/22202BlueNote.jpg” border=”0″>

I think I’m starting to recover from the trip after about 36 hours of sleep in a big comfortable bed. I feel a little guilty about it too. I had a dream last night about NP and their two roadies driving and hauling their equipment all over the country. This band isn’t traveling in any big nice luxurious bus with a driver. NFW! They travel in two big vans with a U- Haul trailer. They haul their stuff into each club, set it up, get it tuned right, do a sound check, play a hard, hard, one hour, 15 song set, break it all down again, pack it up, haul it to the next town, and start all over again. Seems like it would become pretty dull after a while…but the one roadie(the guy with the cool dreads-what is his name..dammit)seemed to love it. His picture is on the NP website and I got his picture too. If I ever get them transferred from the Mac laptop to the Sony PC, I’ll post them here on the Chronicles. In the meantime you can see a lot of pictures on BMF’s site…cause he’s much faster than I’ll ever be. 🙂

NP played at the Granada Theatre in Lawrence, Kansas last night which is a 14 hour drive from Aspen. And that doesn’t take into account there was a huge snowstorm on Wednesday as they were leaving the Rocky Mountains. That would have given them a one night break to gear up for their show which I’m sure was kickass as usual. Tonight they play at The Blue Note in Columbia, MO…a measley three hour drive from Lawrence. It appears they have added a third band , Split Lip Rayfield, a band from Witchita, Kansas to this leg of the tour. They are described as Bluegrass Outlaws. We’ll fire Morpheus up to get a little taste.

Want to know how Nashville Pussy got started?

Blaine started it all off. We’ve done somewhere around 3000 shows as far as I can figure. We are a guitar driven band. I play bass and hold the foundation. Ruyter has been playing for about 23 years and Blaine has been playing for about 19 years. They write the songs and Blaine writes all the lyrics. Blaine was in a band called “Nine Pound Hammer” and I went to see them when I was living in North Carolina. I met with him and we hung out because his band had the next day off. I told him I was in this “All girl cock rock band” and I play bass. He asked if I was any good. The cool thing with Blaine was he talked about his wife (bandmate and lead guitarist Ruyter) all night. Girls can smell bullshit a mile away and the fact that he could talk about his old lady all night long really showed me that he was for real. He even called her up and we talked. We ended up meeting and talked about starting a band called the “Homewreckers” but it sort of just fizzled out. About 6 months later I got a phone call saying that “Hammer” is still together but Me (Blaine), Ruyter and Adam (the old Hammer drummer) are jamming in Kentucky but we need a bass player can you be here this coming weekend. I had no car, my bass was in hock! 🙁 I took a 23 hour bus ride and showed up on the doorstep. And then I also mentioned that I breathe fire. It materialized over a boy. I did it to impress a boy! Anyways, so now the four of us are together, all 500 miles apart! Adam is in Kentucky, Ruyter and Blaine are in Nashville and I’m in North Carolina. We all jammed at Adam’s because his grandmother let us use the attic because she was a nurse and worked the graveyard shift. This let us jam all night long and that’s our hours. We’re usually ready to start jamming at about 1 in the morning, and then take a break at about 6am. We jammed for several times for 3 days at a time. Blaine had 5 songs done. He’d send them to me on a tape. I’d learn them and then come up to the jam session with what I learned and we learned 6 covers so we had about a 30 minute set. We did covers of Elvis, Mitch Ryder, ZZ Top we did all kinds of covers. Soon we started hookin up our own tours. The first one was for 4 days. Then the next was for 10. Then the next was for 4 weeks, then 8 weeks. We never booked gigs with just us playing. We always played with other bands and stole their audiences. It was amazing! We just stayed on the road. After the 6 week tour we all quit our jobs and decided that we all needed to move into the same house. Blaine and Ruyter’s house in Nashville had burned down so we figured we’d continue touring. We would drive 1000 miles out to Phoenix to do a record store show for 14 people on our day off! Blaine had a little 6 cylinder van with one door welded shut and windows that wouldn’t go down. We loaded the van, the four of us hopped in with one other guy that did everything for us….sound, mic’s, tech stuff and we just hit the road. By the end of that 6 week tour Peter Davis had called us up and he kept us on the road. He was impressed because we sold out a place in Minneapolis on a Monday night! His eyes just lit up so we started working together. We did 20 months with only 10 weeks off. The records were never even thought of. Those all came as a result of the touring….and playing those songs thousands of times.

from a Corey Parks interview in June of 2000…
