We are heading over to the 9 Lives Saloon in a bit to watch Artimus Pyledriver for the first time. I am probably mistaken but from what I understand reading from their website, this is their first show…?..surely not. If so we will be there in all our glory taking pictures of the show and talking to the guys. Look for a full review and stuff about the show tomorrow on both this website and also on “Whatever Happened to Rock & Roll“.
Nashville Pussy Interview – October of 2001 by Antimusic
This is a great video interview for those of you who haven’t heard it yet. I don’t know who the guy is doing the interview but he’s really good. His pen name is Phil Dis., who is probably a real sober respectable type journalist because he asked good and sometimes tough questions. If you can’t get a chance to talk to the members of Nashville Pussy before or after a show, this interview will give you a little bit of their off stage essence. They are real down to earth people who love their music, fans, and lifestyle.
The interview is approximately 12 minutes long. It has very poor video quality and some gaps in the sound, but it’s still a really great listen. NP talks about touring and how much they love it and how they go crazy when they are off the road. Phil asks Blaine what direction the third album would take considering the first album, “Let Them Eat Pussy” was more raw and punk than the second album’s, “Highway to Hell” hard rock sound. Blaine tells him the new album will be pretty much where the last album left off. They were hoping the new album would be out this past Christmas but were having problems with the album title…probably cause they want to call it, “Keep On Fuckin”…lol. Or maybe it’s what BMF and I were discussing…they are trying to come up with a cover design that will come close to the last two covers although the cover for “Let Them Eat Pussy” is one of a kind and will be hard to ever top. The album is first being released in Japan before being released here in the USA sometime in April.
However they have been playing a few of their new songs on tour since May or so last year … “Drunk Daddy” , “Say Something Nasty”, and “Keep On Fuckin'” . I also learned from the interview “You Give Drugs a Bad Name” is also a new song. I don’t know why but we thought it was one of their older songs. I guess because we saw them perform it at the Echo in Atlanta this past November. So it seemed like a oldie or someting but oh contrare because it’s really one of the highlights of their live show…the part where Blaine starts his storytelling and really gets the crowd cranking. We have a small piece of video of it from Colorado. After hearing the interview and reading this and this, it’s pretty clear the song is about Corey Parks. Blaine was real cool about it though when asked if Corey quit or was fired…he confirmed Corey was the one who quit the band.
One part of the interview seemed a little sad considering Tracy has now left the band under strange circumstances. Phil asked Tracey how she liked playing with NP and how it compared to her experiences with Helldorado and Wives. Tracey seemed really cool talking about how much more organized things were and how nice and “uncrazy” everyone was in NP. Phil also asked who wrote the new songs for the album for which Blaine replied he wrote all the songs except for the two Tracey had written for the new album. Ouch.
Other stuff they talked about: what kind of cars they drive…mostly souped up Chevrolets..their musical influences..who they listen to now…discussion of the controversial Pussy name…and favorite places to play. Plus Blaine recalls a funny story about Slayer.

I think I’m starting to recover from the trip after about 36 hours of sleep in a big comfortable bed. I feel a little guilty about it too. I had a dream last night about NP and their two roadies driving and hauling their equipment all over the country. This band isn’t traveling in any big nice luxurious bus with a driver. NFW! They travel in two big vans with a U- Haul trailer. They haul their stuff into each club, set it up, get it tuned right, do a sound check, play a hard, hard, one hour, 15 song set, break it all down again, pack it up, haul it to the next town, and start all over again. Seems like it would become pretty dull after a while…but the one roadie(the guy with the cool dreads-what is his name..dammit)seemed to love it. His picture is on the NP website and I got his picture too. If I ever get them transferred from the Mac laptop to the Sony PC, I’ll post them here on the Chronicles. In the meantime you can see a lot of pictures on BMF’s site…cause he’s much faster than I’ll ever be. 🙂
NP played at the Granada Theatre in Lawrence, Kansas last night which is a 14 hour drive from Aspen. And that doesn’t take into account there was a huge snowstorm on Wednesday as they were leaving the Rocky Mountains. That would have given them a one night break to gear up for their show which I’m sure was kickass as usual. Tonight they play at The Blue Note in Columbia, MO…a measley three hour drive from Lawrence. It appears they have added a third band , Split Lip Rayfield, a band from Witchita, Kansas to this leg of the tour. They are described as Bluegrass Outlaws. We’ll fire Morpheus up to get a little taste.
Want to know how Nashville Pussy got started?
Blaine started it all off. We’ve done somewhere around 3000 shows as far as I can figure. We are a guitar driven band. I play bass and hold the foundation. Ruyter has been playing for about 23 years and Blaine has been playing for about 19 years. They write the songs and Blaine writes all the lyrics. Blaine was in a band called “Nine Pound Hammer” and I went to see them when I was living in North Carolina. I met with him and we hung out because his band had the next day off. I told him I was in this “All girl cock rock band” and I play bass. He asked if I was any good. The cool thing with Blaine was he talked about his wife (bandmate and lead guitarist Ruyter) all night. Girls can smell bullshit a mile away and the fact that he could talk about his old lady all night long really showed me that he was for real. He even called her up and we talked. We ended up meeting and talked about starting a band called the “Homewreckers” but it sort of just fizzled out. About 6 months later I got a phone call saying that “Hammer” is still together but Me (Blaine), Ruyter and Adam (the old Hammer drummer) are jamming in Kentucky but we need a bass player can you be here this coming weekend. I had no car, my bass was in hock! 🙁 I took a 23 hour bus ride and showed up on the doorstep. And then I also mentioned that I breathe fire. It materialized over a boy. I did it to impress a boy! Anyways, so now the four of us are together, all 500 miles apart! Adam is in Kentucky, Ruyter and Blaine are in Nashville and I’m in North Carolina. We all jammed at Adam’s because his grandmother let us use the attic because she was a nurse and worked the graveyard shift. This let us jam all night long and that’s our hours. We’re usually ready to start jamming at about 1 in the morning, and then take a break at about 6am. We jammed for several times for 3 days at a time. Blaine had 5 songs done. He’d send them to me on a tape. I’d learn them and then come up to the jam session with what I learned and we learned 6 covers so we had about a 30 minute set. We did covers of Elvis, Mitch Ryder, ZZ Top we did all kinds of covers. Soon we started hookin up our own tours. The first one was for 4 days. Then the next was for 10. Then the next was for 4 weeks, then 8 weeks. We never booked gigs with just us playing. We always played with other bands and stole their audiences. It was amazing! We just stayed on the road. After the 6 week tour we all quit our jobs and decided that we all needed to move into the same house. Blaine and Ruyter’s house in Nashville had burned down so we figured we’d continue touring. We would drive 1000 miles out to Phoenix to do a record store show for 14 people on our day off! Blaine had a little 6 cylinder van with one door welded shut and windows that wouldn’t go down. We loaded the van, the four of us hopped in with one other guy that did everything for us….sound, mic’s, tech stuff and we just hit the road. By the end of that 6 week tour Peter Davis had called us up and he kept us on the road. He was impressed because we sold out a place in Minneapolis on a Monday night! His eyes just lit up so we started working together. We did 20 months with only 10 weeks off. The records were never even thought of. Those all came as a result of the touring….and playing those songs thousands of times.
We just got back from the Aspen show at the Double Diamond. We called it a early night and left right after NP played since we have to be up at 6 AM for our flight back to Atlanta. I wish we had one more day to explore Aspen because it really looked cool, maybe next time around.
I thought it would be hard to beat the crowd in Steamboat Springs but the crowd in Aspen proved me wrong. The club was small and packed shoulder to shoulder with people. I’m quite sure it was probably some kind of disco in the past because the stage was set up in what used to be a sunken dance floor. Real early 80’s style. I thought at first we might be dealing with another “beautiful people” crowd like we had in Vail. But they turned into moshing animals as soon as NP got cranked up.
We arrived at the Double Diamond around 9PM just in time for the sound check. Ruyter looked so cute in her racoon hat, glasses, and sheriff’s star pinned to her sweatshirt. It was really cold in the place and Katie was freezing. We saw her later all bundled up in her coat and red scarf before their set started. Sometimes just seeing stuff like a sound check can be real exciting to those people standing around watching it. They warmed up with “High as Hell” and it was so awesome.
After they finished Ruyter, Katie, and Blaine came over…talked for a few minutes and signed some cd’s for us. Thank you guys. And I just want to say HI to Ruyter’s mom…and let you know we got some great pictures of your girl and everybody else too for that matter. 🙂 And one other thing…she’s kind and sweet and plays guitar better than any man I’ve seen. And she’s funny…I’m sure she will tell you about the dog poop box which we looked for but could never find…
I have to mention one other thing I saw that made me smile to myself cause it reminded me of Jeff…and that’s while we were sitting there talking about silly stuff like dog poop and how expensive everything was in Aspen…Blaine gently rushed Ruyter to hurry up cause they had to get ready to go on stage. He was really so sweet to her.
The show as always rocked and was full of energy. They had to play a shortened set so the Reverend could get on by midnight I guess. They left out “Fried Chicken and Coffee”…dammit. Blaine was extra good with his between song stuff and he let out some screams that would make any metalhead proud. Katie looks more and more comfortable and she smiled a lot more tonight. Ruyter was her sexy ass kicking self as usual. And Jeremy just looked real happy to see a joint land on stage and eventually in his hand. And he directed a drumstick towards Jeff who now happily has a third one to join the pair he already had from two previous shows.
I’m sure there is a ton more I could write and probably will later on when we get back to Atlanta and things calm down. But right now I need to get in the bed and get some sleep. It’s been one exciting week and we wish it wasn’t over, but we’ll save up some more money and get back out there again soon to continue the Nashville Pussy chronicles…maybe the New York or Florida leg of the tour.
We took several little 20 second videos…but they are huge files. I’ll post one here and hopefully you can take a look at it. You will need Quicktime to view it. I’ll try and figure out how to reformat it when I get back to Atlanta.
1. Talking to Jeremy before the show.
2. Talking to Ruyter after the show.
3. Getting awesome pictures of me & Ruyter.
4. Talking to Katie after the show.
5. Miss Chicky getting up close to the stage with me the whole show.

1. Finding out some Jeremy facts before the show.
2. Ruyter coming by and promising me she would “take care” of Jeff.
3. Ruyter doing as she promised.
4. Getting right up close to the stage.
5. BMF protecting me from the dirty dirty mosh pit people. 🙂
The show last night was the best one by far…my ears are still ringing…but more on that later. We gotta get out of here and get on the road to Aspen before we get snowed in…which would be great but then we would miss our last night of Nashville Pussy. And that ain’t gonna happen.
Nashville Pussy @ Levelz Club in Steamboat Springs, Colorado
The drive to Steamboat Springs was incredibly beautiful. So far Steamboat Springs is the best place we’ve been. If we are going snowmobiling this will be the place to do it…if I can talk Jeff into it. Boulder is great and Vail is pretty good if you have LOTS of money. As for Colorado Springs…just about any other place on earth would be my favorite. Nothing personal but anybody living there should move. Sorry to be so harsh.
We have performed our pre-show rituals and are just on our way out to see NP at the Levelz Club (right up there) We saw the Reverend HH’s bus pulling in right after we took that picture and the club manager said NP were not schedueled to arrive until 7 for soundcheck. NP isn’t in a bus but a white van with a U-haul behind it. I wonder if they drove all the way from Atlanta? If so…goddamn.
2. Talking to Ruyter after the show, getting the info on Tracy, and Ruyter asking me to post the information on our website…(which she loves by the way.)
3. The security guards actually inviting me to get between the barricades to take pictures when usually they are telling me to get back. (see #1 for the reason why)
4. Getting another drumstick. Now I have a pair.
5. Seeing Blaine get real crazy into it…jumping up and down with the mike in one had, beer in the other, and the guitar strapped across his chest.

1. The official photo pass was indeed cool.
2. But getting searched for weapons at the door was even more better.
3. Getting some video especially the ones with Blaine’s “You Give Drugs a Bad Name” speech and the one with Jeff watching the Ruyter. I think he has a crush. 🙂
4. Gettin lectured by the guy for taking too many pictures of Ruyter and not enough of Katie. But…But…Katie doesn’t take her shirt off. Yet.
5. Watching Jeff from the other side of the stage get a chance to talk to Ruyter and feeling a little jealous, but really being happy for him cause he loves this whole roadtrip and the rock and roll thing so much. And I know he loves me with all his heart.
Tonight we are in Colorado Springs, where we are supposed to see our buddies we met in Vail, Kyle & Jake. I think I’m gonna switch from bourbon to vodka tonight. We got a new smart media card for the camera so we can now take over 80 pictures at a time. And we figured out how to make short movies so look for those too. All of our pictures and movies will be available when we get back to Atlanta and get them all linked up and stuff. We have some awesome ones already.
Till after the show…Viva La Vulva MF’s.
5 for 2.16.02 @ 8150

1. Being on the Guest List
2. Ruyter doin’ one of those awesome leg kicks right towards my face.
3. Ruyter walking over to me mid song, turning around & shaking her ass at me.
4. Some dumb ass threw a dollar bill at Ruyter at the end of the show, she picked it up, looked right at him, ripped it into pieces and threw it back at him along with the middle finger.
5. Realizing I’m living a dream with the girl I love the mostest.

1. That unfuckinbelievable bartender remembering us from the night before and serving us in real glasses the whole night instead of plastic cups.
2. Sitting on barstools with our legs between each others, waiting for the show to start, and having one of those deep conversations we get into.
3. A dumb blonde coming up to me and asking if we are the ones following NP around and then telling me I have nice teeth. heh.
4. Jeff making me go to the front of the stage where I felt the whole floor shaking and saw Ruyter slide her hand(while playing the guitar)between her legs during “Fried Chicken and Coffee” on the lyric, I’ll Shoot Your Ass….oh that makes me hard. I loved that part…a lot.
5. I liked the dollar bill thing too cause it was such a cool “fuck you” to whoever threw it up there.
