Lady Lucy’s Walk at Wentworth Castle, South Yorkshire. Wentworth Castle is actually a “stately home” with glorious gardens and the poignantly named Lady Lucy’s Walk– a closely spaced, cathedral like avenue of Lime Trees planted around 1920 in honour of Thomas Wentworth’s daughter Lucy, who fell in love with the estate gardener and (you know this isn’t going to end well) died of a broken heart after they were forbidden to marry. They say she still wanders the gardens, weaving wistfully in forlorn fashion as she weeps amongst the willows and pines amidst the Limes for her lost love. (woodytyke flickr)
